Rare photo of NWA Hall of Famer Jack Brisco.

Photo Courtesy of Debra R. Taylor
Jack Brisco was inducted into the NWA Hall of Fame back in 2010.  Brisco was a two time NWA Worlds Champion.  Brisco's victories came at the expense of two icons in the sport, Giant Baba and Harley Race.  Brisco had defeated Harley Race in Houston Texas and would hold the title for 500 days before losing to Giant Baba in Kagoshima Japan, winning it a few days later in Japan.  Nearly a year later, Brisco's last reign as champion would come to an end when Terry Funk would win the title in Tampa Florida. Brisco held titles through the NWA, from Georgia Championship Wrestling, to the Mid-Atlantic, from the Gulf Coast, to Mid America.  Brisco was also honored in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008 and winner of the Lou Thesz Award in the Cauliflower Alley Club in 2005.  Thanks to Debra Taylor for allowing us to use this photo.

NWA Hall of Fame Class of 2010 Part One

Hello everybody, before I begin I just want to apologize real quick for not writing here in the last couple of months I have been busy but I am back and ready to go.

The 2010 NWA Hall of Fame maybe the best class so far. In this class alone you have two promoters, a former junior heavyweight champion of the world and four former heavyweight champions of the world. So let's look at some of these men who have made a mark on the NWA.

In the mid 1990's no other man help keep the legacy and tradition of the NWA alive and going like Dan Severn. When he defeated Chris Candido for the belt back in 1995 nobody would've ever guessed that he would have a four year reign as champion the longest reign since Dory Funk Jr. Dan was the definition of a champion, went all over the world to defend the title while having a successful career as an MMA fighter for UFC in it's early years. What some people might not know about the Beast is that he is also a former NWA United Kingdom Heavyweight champion. Dan Severn, the man who kept the NWA going in the mid 1990's while some people may question him earning a spot in the hall of fame deserves it for everything he did for the NWA.

Before Ric Flair became known as The Nature Boy there was another one, the original Nature Boy Buddy Rogers. In the 1960's there was no other charismatic wrestler as Rogers and when he defeated Pat O'Connor for the heavyweight title on June 30, 1961 in Chicago he started something that hadn't been seen since the days of Gorgeous George. While he is recognized as a good wrestler he is sometimes overlooked as a guy on the mic, especially if you hear his interview after becoming the champion. Wherever Rogers went in the NWA he was a winner. No matter what territory it was he would win championships. Buddy Rogers, the original Nature Boy is long overdue to be apart of this Hall of Fame.

Now it's time for a question. Who is the last Japanese wrestler to hold the NWA World Heavyweight title? While some may guess Great Muta, it's actually Shinya Hashimoto. One of Japan's "Three Musketeers" in the early 90's for New Japan, he ended up being one of the most psychical champions of all time. While he had the size he was also a quick wrestler and could surprise his opponents at times with his quickness. Who knows what would've happened if he had held the title longer or had a second run before TNA came into play but he will be known as one of the greatest champions of all time.

Arguably the most famous feud of the 1970's was the Funks and the Briscos. Three of the four men ended up becoming world heavyweight champion and Jack Brisco was one of those men. A fan of wrestling since he was a kid, he was dedicated to the sport at a young age with men to look up to like Lou Thesz and Danny Hodge. After a successful career in college, he became a pro and he ended up becoming one of the greatest wrestlers to transfer from the amateur ranks to the professional ranks. Jack could have some of the best matches with just about any wrestler in the world during his time. But not only was he a successful singles wrestler but he was also successful as a tag team wrestler with his brother Jerry. A rare feat that is accomplished by some, Jack Brisco could do it all and he did do it all.

That's it for this look at the Hall of Fame. Next time I'll look at Danny Hodge, the Andersons, The Original Sheik, Nick Gulas & Ed Chuman. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!

NWA Well Represented on WWE List

The recent list of the top 50 Superstars as released by World Wrestling Entertainment included a number of former NWA stars. The list, which as with any list is relative and subject to conjecture, debate and opinion is full of the expected names that made the WWE what is it today including Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, Steve Austin, Randy Savage and Randy Orton.
Former NWA stars listed include Harley Race, Ricky Steamboat, who made a name for himself in the Mid-Atlantic area before moving on to the WWE and WCW, Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Lou Thesz, Terry Funk, Dory Funk Jr., and Jack Brisco.
Piper, who was instrumental in the development of the WWE, then the WWF in 1985 when he and Paul Orndorff teamed to battle Hulk Hogan and actor Mr. T at the first WrestleMania, was a fixture in the Mid-Atlantic region and had epic and brutal matches against Greg Valentine as well as the Portland territory where he came on the scene and started to make a name for himself. Piper and Valentine had one of the most brutal matches at StarCade ’83 that was a dog collar match and Piper suffered a ruptured ear drum causing a partial hearing loss.
Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes were tied on the WWE list at 17 which seemed very low for two of the greatest stars in wrestling but one has to remember this list was relative to the WWE, not wrestling. Flair’s career speaks for itself being a world champion 21 times, wrestling into his 60s and being an integral part of Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Association, Mid-Atlantic, Georgia Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling, the WWE and now TNA. Ric Flair is to wrestling what Babe Ruth was to baseball.
Dusty Rhodes made his mark in Florida during the 70s and early 80s before becoming a major part of Georgia Championship Wrestling and later World Championship Wrestling. Rhodes has been the brains behind a number of major wrestling events including StarCade and gimmicks including The Undertaker who was originally a gimmick slated for Black Bart. Rhodes time in-ring in the WWE was spent mostly making a mockery of himself by wearing embarrassing black tights with big yellow polka-dots. Rhodes has continued to be part of the WWE as a trainer, agent and talent scout for the Florida developmental league.
The Funk brothers, both NWA World Champions are the sons of legendary NWA star Dory Funk Sr. whose Texas territory was one of the most successful in wrestling and spawned a great many careers. Dory spent a short amount of time in the WWE but brother Terry went not only as himself but also in character as Chainsaw Charlie for a brief run.
Jack Brisco, along with brother Gerry were mainstays in the WWE after selling their portion of Georgia Championship Wrestling to Vince McMahon without the knowledge of partner Ole Anderson which led to dark times for GCW before WCW was eventually founded. Jack Brisco was one of the most heralded champions the NWA had having the legit tough qualities as well as the amateur wrestling background that was coveted in the 60s and 70s.
The legendary Lou Thesz wrestled for Toots Mondt and Vince McMahon Sr. on occasion, representing the NWA as only Thesz could in the NorthEast. For Thesz to be acknowledged by the WWE speaks volumes for Thesz and his imprint on wrestling as a whole. Thesz was one of the best pure wrestlers and hookers to ever hold the NWA title.
For the NWA to have so many former champions and stars make a list of the top 50 Superstars as composed by the WWE shows just how strong the NWA was and still is in the world of professional wrestling. Today’s NWA, while not as powerful as it was in its heyday, still carries a strong tradition of tough and talented champions and still has enough clout to make the cut on a list of some of the best wrestlers in the industry.
