NWA Well Represented on WWE List

The recent list of the top 50 Superstars as released by World Wrestling Entertainment included a number of former NWA stars. The list, which as with any list is relative and subject to conjecture, debate and opinion is full of the expected names that made the WWE what is it today including Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, Steve Austin, Randy Savage and Randy Orton.
Former NWA stars listed include Harley Race, Ricky Steamboat, who made a name for himself in the Mid-Atlantic area before moving on to the WWE and WCW, Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Lou Thesz, Terry Funk, Dory Funk Jr., and Jack Brisco.
Piper, who was instrumental in the development of the WWE, then the WWF in 1985 when he and Paul Orndorff teamed to battle Hulk Hogan and actor Mr. T at the first WrestleMania, was a fixture in the Mid-Atlantic region and had epic and brutal matches against Greg Valentine as well as the Portland territory where he came on the scene and started to make a name for himself. Piper and Valentine had one of the most brutal matches at StarCade ’83 that was a dog collar match and Piper suffered a ruptured ear drum causing a partial hearing loss.
Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes were tied on the WWE list at 17 which seemed very low for two of the greatest stars in wrestling but one has to remember this list was relative to the WWE, not wrestling. Flair’s career speaks for itself being a world champion 21 times, wrestling into his 60s and being an integral part of Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Association, Mid-Atlantic, Georgia Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling, the WWE and now TNA. Ric Flair is to wrestling what Babe Ruth was to baseball.
Dusty Rhodes made his mark in Florida during the 70s and early 80s before becoming a major part of Georgia Championship Wrestling and later World Championship Wrestling. Rhodes has been the brains behind a number of major wrestling events including StarCade and gimmicks including The Undertaker who was originally a gimmick slated for Black Bart. Rhodes time in-ring in the WWE was spent mostly making a mockery of himself by wearing embarrassing black tights with big yellow polka-dots. Rhodes has continued to be part of the WWE as a trainer, agent and talent scout for the Florida developmental league.
The Funk brothers, both NWA World Champions are the sons of legendary NWA star Dory Funk Sr. whose Texas territory was one of the most successful in wrestling and spawned a great many careers. Dory spent a short amount of time in the WWE but brother Terry went not only as himself but also in character as Chainsaw Charlie for a brief run.
Jack Brisco, along with brother Gerry were mainstays in the WWE after selling their portion of Georgia Championship Wrestling to Vince McMahon without the knowledge of partner Ole Anderson which led to dark times for GCW before WCW was eventually founded. Jack Brisco was one of the most heralded champions the NWA had having the legit tough qualities as well as the amateur wrestling background that was coveted in the 60s and 70s.
The legendary Lou Thesz wrestled for Toots Mondt and Vince McMahon Sr. on occasion, representing the NWA as only Thesz could in the NorthEast. For Thesz to be acknowledged by the WWE speaks volumes for Thesz and his imprint on wrestling as a whole. Thesz was one of the best pure wrestlers and hookers to ever hold the NWA title.
For the NWA to have so many former champions and stars make a list of the top 50 Superstars as composed by the WWE shows just how strong the NWA was and still is in the world of professional wrestling. Today’s NWA, while not as powerful as it was in its heyday, still carries a strong tradition of tough and talented champions and still has enough clout to make the cut on a list of some of the best wrestlers in the industry.

The Legendary 10lbs. of Gold-- FOR AUCTION

If you ever wanted to old a true piece of professional wrestling history, you may be in luck as it looks like the true ultimate prize is going to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

The National Wrestling Alliance
World championship belt, which had been in Ric Flair's possession since Jim Crockett Promotions introduced the "big gold belt" in the mid-1980s, will be auctioned off by Highspots via Ebay this Monday. This is the belt that was originally worn by Jack
Brisco, Dusty Rhodes and Harley Race, among others, which was chronicled in the excellent "Ten Pounds of Gold" book that was released this past summer.

The decision to auction off the belt is apparently the latest maneuver in an ongoing issue between Highspots and Flair over money owed going back many months. The word that has been making the rounds, as previously noted ont he site, is that Highspots loaned Flair a sum that has yet to be paid back. Sources indicate that Flair's side claimed the debt was paid off via appearances Flair made for Highspots.

Sources indicate another part of the ongoing issues may be over Highspots' decision to release DVDs featuring Flair from last August's NWA Legends convention (a Flair/Harley Race Q&A Session and the 2009 Hall of Heroes induction ceremony where Flair inducted Blackjack Mulligan) as Flair's side has apparently claimed
Highspots didn't have the rights to release the DVDs. Highspots previously worked with Flair on several shoot interview DVD releases and booked him for a number of appearances on independent events in the last year.

The auction for the belt (unless other forces intervene) will begin on Monday. For more information, email Highspots@aol.com.

The Legendary 10lbs of Gold that was worn around the waist of Ric Flair. This title holds a lot of history between its leather and gold. And the Dome Globe has travel to more places in the world than most of us ever will. The story of the championship was recently told by Dick Bourne and Dave Millican. Their book is available and you can get your copy here!

It should also be noted that if you do not have the $75,000 to bid on this piece of history, you can purchase and an adult replica belt. Check out the belt at NWA Midwest

NWA Mid-Atlantic results from Rutherford County, North Carloina

Jeff Richards with Georgia Wrestling History did a great review of the NWA Mid-Atlantic show featuring NWA Hall of Famer Ric Flair. I have heard that Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling does a lot of benefit shows in North Carolina to help out local charities. And it really is commendable that they are able to give back to the community and continue to promote the NWA and the legacy of wrestling in that area. Aside from the action in the ring, The former NWA World Champion several times over was in attendance to do the autographs and pictures for the fans who came out. The quick results for the 600 plus in attendance were:

Chris Hamrick defeated Donnie Dollar$

MACW Ladies ChampionshipMatch
Krissy Vaine defeated Jayme Jameson to win the vacant MACW Ladies Title

Ricky Morton defeated Andru Bane

MACW Jr. Heavyweight Title
Rikki Nelson retained defeated Richie Steamboat

MACW Heavyweight Title
Buff "The Stuff" Bagwell pinned MACW Hardcore Champion Beautiful Bobby Eaton.

The fans were said to have gone home happy, but in some confusion it was announced that Rikki Nelson had the ring announcer declare this bout was for the NWA WORLD Jr. Heavyweight Title
As the reporter Richards states "news to Mike Quackenbush, I'm sure." Is this just a simple flub by the Ring Announcer or is Nelson billing his championship as a true Worlds Title? We are discussing the controversy on the message board, join the discussion by clicking here.

Regardless of this minor controversy it seems that the fans in The Rutherford County were treated to a slice of the Mid-Atlantic tradition and Ric Flair continues to make the North Carolina Flair Country.

NWA Week In Review for Feb 21st.

The NWA Week In Review is back and has this been a busy week for the Alliance. First we start off with The Heart Break Kid and WWE referee Marty Elias stopped by the School of Hard Knocks in San Bernardino, California. Marty is a former fixture of Southern California wrestling scene having refereed many of the promotions based in that area. While the EWF Wrestlers and students trained, Shawn Michaels offered advice. Even working with Candice LeRae, where she taught Shawn a few of her submission holds. Shawn was said to be impressed with LeRae. You might remember LeRae being destroyed by Amazing Kong last February on the NWA Showcase.

Last year Shawn Michaels retired Ric Flair. The freedom of Flair's retirement has allowed him to make appearances for Independent promotions and a series of NWA events. WOOOOOOO!!! Ric Flair returns to the Mid-Atlantic this weekend. The 2008 Hall of Famer will be signing Autographs. Everyone who attends the autograph signing will also be in the front row for the Mid-Atlantic event this week. Joining Flair will be fellow Hall of Famers the Midnight Express, Rock 'n' Roll Express at the event in action.

The action doesn't stop there, the NWA will be flexing its muscles all over this weekend. 12 shows across three countries including seven of the United States. In the UK, Scotland Wrestling Association will be in Johnstone to premier the SWAT Division. The participants must outlast each other to earn a title shot at the NWA Scottish Heavyweight Championship at the next show. In Saluda, Virgina NWA Fusion (formerly NWA Virgina) will feature a big main event between to former friends and former North American Tag Team Champions turned bitter rivals. NWA Continental Champion "Big Time" Mike Booth defends his title against "The Pain Train" Preston Quinn as the Old School Empire, explodes!!! Further down south, NWA Anarchy holds its bi-weekly television tapings. The big main event includes a WAR for the Tag Team Titles as New Wave takes on Talent and Money in a no disqualification match. NWA Southwest's Pro Wrestling Federation will be in action in Amarillo and in Tenessee Main Event will be running at the Life Center and at the Wilson County Fair Grounds, Top Rope will be putting on a tag team title main event. In Australia, Explosive Pro Wrestling returns to Maylands to witness Davis Storm put his EPW Heavyweight Title on the line against Richter. Following NWA Pro members to California where will have several events in the state. SoCal Pro, based in San Diego will featuring a Steel Cage match between rivals SoCal Crazy (known on the Showcase as Sidareal.) Mach 1 Wrestling, based in Santa Ana will be crowning its first ever champion in a battle royal. Already confirmed for this event, Aaron Aguilera, former Heritage Champion TJ Perkins, the man that beat Perkins for the Heritage title, Ryan Taylor and 1/2 of the former NWA Tag Team Champions, Joey Ryan. In King City, Worlds Heavyweight Champion Blue Demon Jr. is scheduled to wrestle "Old School" Oliver John. This would mark the second time these two have faced off, the first being at the Columbia Square Studios for the Championship Wrestling from Hollywood pilot.

Speaking of Hollywood, the NWA Showcase should air this weekend, check out NWAWrestling.com for Episode 1 & 2 and Episode 3 should be joining them soon. And if you want some new wrestling, check out NWA Cyberslam. NWA Cyberslam is the joint effort of NWA TopRope and Nashville Indy promotions USTO and ATL. The first episode is available on deman at www.championshipwrestling.tv/cyberslam.

Elsewhere in Nashville, Mike Porter announced that NWA Main Event has ended their relationship with the ION Affiliate in Nashville. Sometimes we felt that I hands were tied at ION as to what we could show and say on air. They are still in negotiations to release their show to a television audience. The Community Life Center, in Nashville, will still host tapings and will continue every Saturday. They will also return to the Fairgrounds monthly. And Porter also said that "this couple of weeks off will give us an opportunity to change the lighting in the building and put up drapes and even build an entrance way. Also we have ordered new equipment to update what we have and we will have that equipment in place within a few days. We are also upgrading our talent roster with the addition of several new wrestlers..." Porter posted on the Mid-Southern Wrestling Message Board that they are planning to bring in talent from NWA Anarchy as well as talent from West Virgina and Southern Indiana. Porter also mentioned that the current roster will be updated.

NWA On-Fire has announced that they have come to terms with Shane Douglas. The man who disrespected the legacy of the NWA threw the Legendary 10lbs. of Gold down in the middle of an arena nearly 15 Years prior. Douglas is announced to be competing against Little Guido who competes somewhat regularly for NWA On-Fire.

Lastly the NWA Pro Wrestling associate Revolution Pro Wrestling will be returning to Las Vegas, April 13th, 14th and 15th. PWR will join the Cauliflower Alley Club to celebrate that past, present, and future of pro wrestling. Last year the event hosted matches featuring NOAH's Go Shioaski versus PWR's "Old School" Oliver John, along with Superstars of Wrestling Heavyweight Champion Ricky Landell. Gabe Ramirez has invited any talent interested in taking part in the show, spots are filling up fast, so please contact info@prowrestling-revolution.com.

Updates to big Showcase events in OK and TX.

The National Wrestling Alliance returns to Oklahoma and Texas with two huge events on October 3rd and 4th including the return of the legendary “Nature Boy” Ric Flair to the NWA! Here is the official preview of the action…

Friday October 3, 2008
Spirit Bank Event Center
Tulsa, Oklahoma
7:30PM Bell Time

NWA World Tag Team Title Match

Champions: Los Luchas ( Phoenix Star y Zokre) vs. Challengers: The Skullkrushers (Walker and Brown)

Since winning the titles earlier this year, Los Luchas have faced several teams that were similar to them in size including The Naturals, The Cutler Brothers, Scorpio Sky & JT Blackstar, Willie Mack & Jerome “LTP” Robinson and more. But none of those teams compare in size to the combined 625 pound Monsters from the Midwest , the Skullkrushers! In their one and only meeting last month in San Antonio , the Skullkrushers manhandled the young luchador champions until the match broke down into a brawl that resulted in a wild no contest. Now that each team knows what to expect, will Los Luchas be able to counter their much larger opponents or will new champions be crowned in the form of the seemingly unstoppable Walker and Brown?

NWA North American Title Match
Champion: Mike DiBiase vs. Challenger: “The Shooter” Brent Albright

The sad news in Tulsa is that their native son, Brent Albright, comes home empty handed. After losing the NWA World’s Heavyweight Title back to Adam Pearce at Ring of Honor’s Glory by Honor VII event in Philadelphia , all plans to welcome home the Champion have been put on hold. Pearce stated that he wouldn’t show up in Tulsa to defend against Albright because of his overwhelming hometown advantage, but Albright has other plans anyway. He fully intends a hometown celebration after he vowed to take the prestigious North American Title from Mike DiBiase. Third generation star DiBiase has other plans as well. DiBiase has added to his reign as North American Champion by recently collecting the NWA Texas Title. Adding a victory over the former World’s Champion would serve to elevate Mike DiBiase even higher toward a possible World Title match.

Special Attraction
Sean “X-Pac” Waltman vs. “Ironman” Rob Conway

Two of the biggest names and best wrestlers anywhere in the NWA will meet head to head in Tulsa . These two met on opposite sides of a tag team war earlier this year at the NWA 60th Anniversary Celebration in Atlanta . Conway came out on the losing end in that encounter and vows to get the better of Waltman this time around. No partners or back-up for either man. See who stands tall in the end, will it be done the “Con-way” or will Rob have to “suck it”?

NWA Oklahoma Title Match
Challenger #1: Slam Shady vs. Challenger #2: Spoiler 2000

When Brent Albright claimed the NWA World’s Championship he returned the NWA Oklahoma State Championship to the NWA Oklahoma offices. Because of the title’s importance, Albright felt he could not do it proper justice while honoring the schedule of the World’s Champion. This led to a flood of phone calls and emails from potential contenders for the championship. The top two contenders have been named and on October 3rd a new Champion will be crowned. Slam Shady and Spoiler 2000 are no strangers to Oklahoma Championships and certainly no stranger to each other. Both men are deserving, but only one can be Champion.

Plus King V and Blue Demon in action!

King V has been called many things in his wrestling career – Mabel, Viscera, Big Daddy V, but “Late for dinner” has never been one of them! The 6’10”, 500 pound big man makes his NWA debut in Tulsa and the opposition is in as much trouble as the catering! Also, the legendary Blue Demon will be in action! Demon has had no qualms stating his desire to get a shot at the NWA World’s Heavyweight Title and a victory in Tulsa could put him even closer to a match with the Champion!

All this plus Tulsa’s own Blake Albright, “Mr. Saturday Night” Michael Barry, XCal, Kenny Campbell, and more on October 3rd!!!

SPECIAL ATTRACTION

RIC FLAIR MEET & GREET!

The R.M. Borchard Fairgrounds in Robstown , Texas presents a very special opportunity for wrestling fans of all ages to meet a legend who transcends the generations. “Nature Boy” Ric Flair will be on hand for a special autograph and memorabilia event. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The event will begin precisely at 3:30 and tickets are limited. Call (361) 387-9002 for more information! Come and celebrate with the legendary Ric Flair, who will inducted into the NWA Hall of Fame at the NWA Showcase Event that evening!

NWA World Title Match:
Champion: “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce (w/C. Edward Vander Pyle) vs. Challenger: “The Shooter” Brent Albright

The biggest feud in recent NWA history continues as Pearce and Albright return to the ring one more time in their string of battles going back over a year! Pearce lived up to his promise to regain the championship, ending Albright’s reign at 7 weeks. Albright has vowed that Pearce’s second run as NWA standard-bearer will not even last half that long. One thing that is certain is that you never know what to expect when these men get in the ring. From fireballs to bloodbaths, this feud has seen it all. Rumor has it that the NWA Board of Directors is thinking of adding a stipulation to this match to attempt to end this dispute once and for all. And will special guest Ric Flair have something to say about the championship that is synonymous with his name? We’ll find out in Texas !

NWA World Tag Team Titles on the line!
Los Luchas ( Phoenix Star y Zokre) or The Skullkrushers (Rasche Brown & Keith Walker) will defend! No matter what happens in Tulsa on October 3rd, both of these teams will be in action on October 4th. The question is, who will be the World Tag Team Champions coming in and who will be the Champs when the day is through? NWA officials will announce the match-ups on the day of the show pending the previous night’s outcome. No matter who fights who, you will see the World Tag Team Titles defended and you will see two of the top teams anywhere in the NWA!

NWA Texas Title Match
Champion: Mike DiBiase vs. Challenger: Kevin Northcutt

Dual Champion Mike DiBiase puts his NWA Texas Championship on the line one night after defending his NWA North American Title against Brent Albright. His opponent is a man very familiar with the NWA Texas Championship and many other titles throughout the NWA, Kevin Northcutt. Will DiBiase’s split in focus over the two day title affair cost him or can the rising star overcome the veteran Northcutt?

Sean “X-Pac” Waltman vs. Rory Fox

One of these men is an international wrestling legend. One of these men feels that he should be. No one can deny the raw ability of Rory Fox, but he has yet to make the huge splash on the wrestling scene that many think he one day will. What better way to kickstart a career than with a victory over Waltman, the crafty veteran with educated feet. Waltman, however, is no one’s stepping stone and plans to use this match to return to title contention.

Don Juan vs. Chris Marval

For years these two men have been known throughout the Southwest as one of the best tag teams around, “The Texas Treats.” Now they will be put to the test against one another and the Treats of Texas will tangle to top the other. These two men bring their battle to the Borchard Fairgrounds Arena and we’ll see which treat is sweetest!

Plus King V and “Ironman” Rob Conway in action!

Once again the legendary mammoth, King V, will test the structural integrity of the NWA’s ring and prayers are requested in advance for anyone silly enough to get in his way. Also in action will be a man who claims he puts the Show in Showcase, “Ironman” Rob Conway!

There you have it! A full weekend of celebration as part of the NWA’s 60th Anniversary! The return of Ric Flair, the debut of King V and several titles on the line!

Join us for all the action! October 3rd in Tulsa , October 4th in Texas ! Don’t miss it!!!

The Class of 2008 Hall of Fame ends on a WHOOOO!!!

Credit NWA Wrestling.com
Charlotte, NC (May 30, 2008) – The word legend is thrown around a lot these days, but “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair is the very definition of the word and the National Wrestling Alliance® will be inducting him into the NWA™ Hall of Fame on June 7th at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA!

Flair is an icon of Pro Wrestling and has collected 16 World Heavyweight Championships including 8 recognized by the NWA™, 6 by World Championship Wrestling and 2 for World Wrestling Entertainment. Flair was also the leader of “The Four Horsemen,” a dominant group of fighters that ruled the Pro Wrestling world for many, many years.

“With Ric Flair’s involvement, I’d say our 60th Anniversary event is truly going to be a history making one. I have been around the NWA™ longer than anyone and I can tell you this marks the first time in close to 20 years that Flair is going to step into an NWA™ building,” said NWA™ Executive Director Robert K. Trobich, he continued “Atlanta this is a great homecoming for many of these men, I mean Rich, Sheik, The Midnights, Koloff and Flair at the site of the old Omni? I hope every wrestling fan in Atlanta comes out and shows the support these men earned and deserved. This may be the greatest Class we’ve ever inducted.”

Since the year 2000, Flair has wrestled for World Wrestling Entertainment on their RAW and Smackdown brands. Earlier this year he lost a match at WrestleMania 24 in Orlando, FL that required him to retire ending a storied 30 plus year career. Today Flair acts a WWE Ambassador, representing the company at special events.

The 2008 NWA™ Hall of Fame Ceremony will take place on June 7th in Atlanta, GA. It is a featured attraction during the NWA™ 60th Anniversary event. Tickets to this event are on sale now at ticketmaster.com or the Philips Arena Box Office.

WWE disses New Japan

In a show of either ignorance or disrespect, the World Wrestling Entertainment labeled New Japan Pro Wrestling stars as fans? Is this a non-story? Pretty much. Ric Flair was greeted by "fans" known to New Japan followers as Yuji Nagata, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Ref Tiger Hattori, and Prince Devitt. Some have speculated that since TNA has developed this relationship with the newly NWA Sanctioned, New Japan Pro Wrestling, WWE decided to take a shot at both parties. Obviously any NJPW wrestlers would have respect for Ric Flair. But its sad that WWE doesn't acknowledge these fine athletes.
