David Marquez interview - Westside Pro Wrestling

NWA Main Man

David Marquez is a member of the NWA Board of Directors, the promoter of NWA Pro and one of the people instrumental in the Explosive Pro Wrestling affiliation with the National Wrestling Alliance. Westside Pro Wrestling's Tez Himself was lucky enough to get the opportunity to speak to the very busy NWA Pro promoter.

WPW: You got your start in the wrestling business in the late 1980's, how did you initially get involved?

MARQUEZ: I started out like most people, being a “jack of all trades”. First taking jackets, then graduated to taking photographs and such. Things really started to fly for me in the mid 1990s when I moved to Missouri and started World Legion Wrestling with Gordon Solie and Harley Race. Its pretty much been full steam since then.

WPW: The NWA had been a major part of Australian Wrestling in the 1970's and early 1980's, but with the decline of World Championship Wrestling, had no affiliate. This changed in 2005 with the affiliation with EPW. Can you tell us how this came about and how do you think the affiliation has gone after nearly five years?

MARQUEZ: Hartley Jackson and Mikey Nicholls came to stay with us at the LA Dojo. They told me about EPW and Davis Storm came right after them. During their time training, we talked about many different possibilities and in those three months we created the relationships in both Perth and Adelaide.

WPW: Mikey Nicholls, Bobby Marshall and Shane Haste seem to have had the biggest success of the Australian talent that have visited SoCal since 2005. There have been title runs (Nicholls and Marshall) and shots at the NWA World Title (Haste). Do you think any Australian talent has a shot at a BOD (Board of Directors) Title reign in the future?

MARQUEZ: I’d say all of those guys you have mentioned, I’d even throw in Damian Slater. I’m very impressed with the ability of everyone I’ve seen from Oz. If I had to pick one…it’ll be a toss up between Haste and Marshall.

WPW: The 2007 NWA Australian Tour was a good time to be a WA wrestling fan, getting to see the likes of Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, Rocky Romero, Sean Waltman and The Real American Heroes compete against EPW talent, who some of us had been following since their early years. Is there any update on a DVD release of the shows and on a personal note, how did you find your first experience of Australia?

MARQUEZ: We’ve planned on adding the tour to our “Reclaiming the Glory” DVD, but that has been put on hold by Big Vision due to the decline of DVD sales world wide. They are looking at other means of distribution for us as I answer these questions. And as for my time down there…I really enjoyed myself. I met some of the most wonderful people I think I will ever meet; I ate meat pies and drank a lot of ice coffee (your version of ice coffee is very different from ours). That tour will not be my last one to your country.

WPW: The NWA Australian National Championship has become stuck in Adelaide, when it was created to be a title defended around the country. The title was last defended outside of South Australia in November 2008, and hasn't been seen in Perth since April 2008. Now with EPW Adelaide's name change to NWA Pro, it seems increasingly unlikely this will change any time soon and Perth fans are disappointed with this situation. Does NWA have authority on the title or is it all in the hands of NWA Pro Adelaide?

MARQUEZ: Yes the NWA does have authority, and the management there knows what’s best for their promotions. I’m sure when the time is right, that green beauty will pop up in Perth again.

WPW: The airing of the NWA on Fire program beginning in January is the first time NWA product has been shown on Australian National TV since World Championship Wrestling in the late 1970's. How did the deal come about?

MARQUEZ: That was secured by a third party distributor that licensed our footage and re-packaged it from existing programs. I have no idea really, what each hour consists of.

WPW: Does the NWA have any plans regarding Australia in the near future?

MARQUEZ: Well yes. It’s my hope to grow the NWA brand there. The management teams there are looking into expanding the brand, but currently there is no rush.

WPW: What does the NWA have in store for 2010 on the American scene?

MARQUEZ: Well, we hope to keep developing new talent. Return to television in a different way, especially the format and model. And to keep up what we are doing and that is producing hundreds if not thousands of NWA sanctioned events world wide.

WPW: Thank you for taking the time to speak to Westside Pro Wrestling, Mr. Marquez.

NWA Pro Wrestling Australia Re-Emerging Card Updates

Re-Emerging will be the biggest event for NWA Wrestling Pro Australia yet. Already announced his the NWA Australian Heavyweight Championship Match featuring Jayson Cooper and former champion "Jag" Hartley Jackson. And the Chair Match between Elliot Sexton and Jimmy Scarlet where the use of chairs as weapons are legal. But Alliance-Wrestling learned today that more matches have been announced via the NWA Pro Wrestling Australia Twitter

Re-Emerging Announcement
In an earlier update, it was mentioned that an NWA Pro wrestler with over 10 years of wrestling experience had an announcement to make at Re-Emerging regarding his future. We can now confirm that the wrestler in question is none other than fan favourite, Bruce 'Havok' Mills. In addition to this, NWA management has received a medical report, outlining the severity of Havok's on-going back injury. This injury has been plaguing Havok for years, due to the number of times he has put his body on the line. Eleven years of going through flaming tables, falling off ladders, being slammed through thumb tacks in brutal matches during his career looks to have finally taken its toll. The report shows the critical damage done to Havok's back, and outlines the issues that may arise for the veteran should he continue wrestling. Does this leaked report have anything to do with Havok's announcement? Have we seen the last match of one of Australia's most well known and respected wrestlers?

NEW Re-Emerging Match - Slex and Damian Slater VS The Grahams
Over the past year, the one-up game being played by Damian Slater and Slex has slowly turned into a serious problem between the two. What started as boastful claims by Slex, and rebuttals by Slater, has at times almost come to blows as each have tried, and failed to capture the NWA Australia National Wrestling Championship. Seeing the animosity rise between the two, Slex's manager, Rohan, has requested a tag team match between The Grahams in the hope of bringing together two of Australia's most gifted wrestlers. If egos can be put aside, the team of Slex and Slater could be one of the most dominant teams the NWA has seen. If it can't, the hot tag team combination of the two brothers, Joey and Greg Graham, will certainly walk away with the win.

NEW Re-Emerging Match - Dick and Balls VS The Commandos Ryan 'Bones' Malone and his unlikely tag team partner, Masked Commando IV will have their work cut out for them on November 14. The Commandos are scheduled to go up against the sometimes comical, but always brutal tag team of 'Dirty' Dick Donovan and his tag partner, the one man demolition machine, 'Wreckin' Ball' Wilson. Better known as Dick & Balls, 'Wreckin Ball' and Dick have dominated over some of Australia's best tag team wrestlers, however always falling short of a victory. At Re-Emerging both teams are looking to make a statement, progressing their careers in NWA Pro. Can the oddball pairing of Bones and the Commando withstand the dastardly duo of Dick & Balls, or will Dick & Balls pull off a much needed victory?

Find out at NWA Pro's RE-EMERGING.

NWA Australia vs. Explosive Pro Wrestling - Adelaide

It started back at EPW Adelaide's Revolution. At the start of the event, Mark Aiston announced the company would be expanding nationally with the help of the NWA. Benny English was opposed to this idea as he wants to keep EPW in his grasp and stay in complete control. At the end of the Revolution, Benny English went on to fire Mark Aiston and the majority of the roster stating that it's EPW who owns the ring and its EPW who has the contracts with the venues, not the National Wrestling Alliance. Mark Aiston responded to English stating that if he wants a war, then he has got one. With Mark Aiston and half the roster apparently fired from EPW, what will happen at the next event?

And at Ground Zero, the NWA Australia & Explosive Pro Wrestling - Adelaide battled for control of the company. The fans seemingly in favor of the NWA Australia and souring on the EPW-A group. The night's battle culminated when the NWA Australian Heavyweight Champion, Jayson Cooper, defeated EPW Adelaide's Slex. The fall out of Ground Zero is unsure, however the NWA successfully defeated EPW. And the promotion has been renamed NWA Pro Wrestling (Australia) and a National Tour has been announced.

Explosive Professional Wrestling was founded in Perth, Western Australia in 2001. Since that time, EPW has held some of the finest wrestling shows in Australia while building a reputation as the best produced wrestling product in the country. In 2004, EPW entered the National Wrestling Alliance.

EPW had expanded into South Australia with the spin off promotion EPW-Adelaide. With the recent events in South Australia, it appears that NWA Pro will now be representing the NWA in Southern Australia.

NWA Week In Review for Feb 21st.

The NWA Week In Review is back and has this been a busy week for the Alliance. First we start off with The Heart Break Kid and WWE referee Marty Elias stopped by the School of Hard Knocks in San Bernardino, California. Marty is a former fixture of Southern California wrestling scene having refereed many of the promotions based in that area. While the EWF Wrestlers and students trained, Shawn Michaels offered advice. Even working with Candice LeRae, where she taught Shawn a few of her submission holds. Shawn was said to be impressed with LeRae. You might remember LeRae being destroyed by Amazing Kong last February on the NWA Showcase.

Last year Shawn Michaels retired Ric Flair. The freedom of Flair's retirement has allowed him to make appearances for Independent promotions and a series of NWA events. WOOOOOOO!!! Ric Flair returns to the Mid-Atlantic this weekend. The 2008 Hall of Famer will be signing Autographs. Everyone who attends the autograph signing will also be in the front row for the Mid-Atlantic event this week. Joining Flair will be fellow Hall of Famers the Midnight Express, Rock 'n' Roll Express at the event in action.

The action doesn't stop there, the NWA will be flexing its muscles all over this weekend. 12 shows across three countries including seven of the United States. In the UK, Scotland Wrestling Association will be in Johnstone to premier the SWAT Division. The participants must outlast each other to earn a title shot at the NWA Scottish Heavyweight Championship at the next show. In Saluda, Virgina NWA Fusion (formerly NWA Virgina) will feature a big main event between to former friends and former North American Tag Team Champions turned bitter rivals. NWA Continental Champion "Big Time" Mike Booth defends his title against "The Pain Train" Preston Quinn as the Old School Empire, explodes!!! Further down south, NWA Anarchy holds its bi-weekly television tapings. The big main event includes a WAR for the Tag Team Titles as New Wave takes on Talent and Money in a no disqualification match. NWA Southwest's Pro Wrestling Federation will be in action in Amarillo and in Tenessee Main Event will be running at the Life Center and at the Wilson County Fair Grounds, Top Rope will be putting on a tag team title main event. In Australia, Explosive Pro Wrestling returns to Maylands to witness Davis Storm put his EPW Heavyweight Title on the line against Richter. Following NWA Pro members to California where will have several events in the state. SoCal Pro, based in San Diego will featuring a Steel Cage match between rivals SoCal Crazy (known on the Showcase as Sidareal.) Mach 1 Wrestling, based in Santa Ana will be crowning its first ever champion in a battle royal. Already confirmed for this event, Aaron Aguilera, former Heritage Champion TJ Perkins, the man that beat Perkins for the Heritage title, Ryan Taylor and 1/2 of the former NWA Tag Team Champions, Joey Ryan. In King City, Worlds Heavyweight Champion Blue Demon Jr. is scheduled to wrestle "Old School" Oliver John. This would mark the second time these two have faced off, the first being at the Columbia Square Studios for the Championship Wrestling from Hollywood pilot.

Speaking of Hollywood, the NWA Showcase should air this weekend, check out NWAWrestling.com for Episode 1 & 2 and Episode 3 should be joining them soon. And if you want some new wrestling, check out NWA Cyberslam. NWA Cyberslam is the joint effort of NWA TopRope and Nashville Indy promotions USTO and ATL. The first episode is available on deman at www.championshipwrestling.tv/cyberslam.

Elsewhere in Nashville, Mike Porter announced that NWA Main Event has ended their relationship with the ION Affiliate in Nashville. Sometimes we felt that I hands were tied at ION as to what we could show and say on air. They are still in negotiations to release their show to a television audience. The Community Life Center, in Nashville, will still host tapings and will continue every Saturday. They will also return to the Fairgrounds monthly. And Porter also said that "this couple of weeks off will give us an opportunity to change the lighting in the building and put up drapes and even build an entrance way. Also we have ordered new equipment to update what we have and we will have that equipment in place within a few days. We are also upgrading our talent roster with the addition of several new wrestlers..." Porter posted on the Mid-Southern Wrestling Message Board that they are planning to bring in talent from NWA Anarchy as well as talent from West Virgina and Southern Indiana. Porter also mentioned that the current roster will be updated.

NWA On-Fire has announced that they have come to terms with Shane Douglas. The man who disrespected the legacy of the NWA threw the Legendary 10lbs. of Gold down in the middle of an arena nearly 15 Years prior. Douglas is announced to be competing against Little Guido who competes somewhat regularly for NWA On-Fire.

Lastly the NWA Pro Wrestling associate Revolution Pro Wrestling will be returning to Las Vegas, April 13th, 14th and 15th. PWR will join the Cauliflower Alley Club to celebrate that past, present, and future of pro wrestling. Last year the event hosted matches featuring NOAH's Go Shioaski versus PWR's "Old School" Oliver John, along with Superstars of Wrestling Heavyweight Champion Ricky Landell. Pro Wres Expo -- NWA International Stars Shine

The massive "Pro Wres EXPO 2008" was held over two days and encompassing three shows from October 24th to the 25th. The show was broken into three chapters: Part 1 - Green Chapter, Part 2 - White Chapter and Part 3 - Blue Chapter. The shows were held in Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan, and saw a mixture of wrestlers from all around the world come together for the event. The main fixture of the 3 days was the "Continent Confrontation Tournament" a tag team tournament. Not only did many wrestlers from all over the world appear, several Japanese and US companies were represented including New Japan, ZERO1, Big Japan and TNA and NWA Ireland and NWA Australia. Almost the entire ZERO1 roster took part in the three shows:

The first show of the Pro Wres Expo which took place in Tokyo featured many international talent. Former NWA British Common Wealth Heavyweight Champion Paul Tracey competed in match. And current NWA Australian National Champion Hartley Jackson lost to Zero One's Ikuto Hidaka (who has made a few appearances on the NWA Showcase). The following night Jackson competed in another match. This time Tracey tag teamed with Heddi Karaoui in a lossing effort to Kohei Sato and Ryouji Sai, when Sai pinned Karaoui. And on the final day Jackson teaming with the Himalayan Tiger and Kikutaro defeating the team of Tengu Kaiser and Tengu Baron when Jackson used a piledriver on Tengu Baron.

I for one thing its great to see memebers of the Alliance wrestling Internationally. I was kind of disapointed to notice that none of the North American NWA wrestlers were competing.

The Globalization of the NWA

It wasn't long ago, when the influence of the National Wrestling Alliance only went as far as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. With all the talk of how the NWA has grown leaps and bounds in the past few years, very little is spoken about the International Expansion of the NWA. Here's a break down of the growth of the NWA in the past 5 Years.

2003
NWA Mid-Atlantic used a mix of the their current roster and an expanded roster that included Dr. Death Steve Williams and Terry Taylor to promote a series of events in the People's Republic of China.

2005
NWA Mid-Atlantic made another expedition to Asia, this time to Korea. This show was packed with Superstars; Sting, Billy Gunn, Dusty Rhodes, Buff Bagwell, Terry Taylor, Raven, DDP, AJ Styles and then Worlds Champion Jeff Jarret.

2006
NWA Championship Wrestling From Florida begin to sanction Korea's World Wrestling Alliance, creating NWA South Korea.

NWA Pro Wrestling enter a partnership with Explosive Pro Wrestling in Perth and Adelaide. The partnership includes NWA Sanctioning of NWA Australia and a talent exchange.

2007
NWA Pro tours Australia with NWA Australia. Claudio Castagnoli, and Rocky Romero join the Australian roster to determine an Australian National Champion. Plus a World Tag Team defense of then champions, The Real American Heroes. And a main event that saw Sean Waltman wrestle Bryan Danielson.

2008
David Marquez, with Blue Demon Jr. announces the creation of a new NWA member in Mexico.
New Japan Pro Wrestling rejoins the National Wrestling Alliance.
NWA Pro announced its sanctioning of International Catch Wrestling Association as NWA France.

Bobby Jo Marhall Interview from EPWPerth.com

In late 2002, a skinny, lanky, quiet spoken young man walked into the first Dynamite Factory in Maddington.

After three and a half months of intense training, he made his debut in a four way elimination match. Despite being the first man eliminated from the match, BobbyBadBlood made quite an impression on fans and wrestlers alike.

Over the coming years, he developed into one of the most promising wrestlers in EPW. His team with Chris J Lazareth, the Genetically Superior Team, went on to have two reigns as the EPW tag team champions.

After a trip to America in 2006, Bobby returned, determined to try and make it as a singles wrestler. Despite not walking away the winner, Bobby was able to enhance his reputation with a stunning performance against Jimmy Payne at RE-AWAKENING V.

A rematch led to a ladder match which could be considered the single greatest bout in EPW history.

But despite all his achievements, Bobby was garnering a reputation as a man who choked when the gold was on the line. Though out 2006 & 2007, Bobby lost no less than four championship matches.

All that finally changed on February 16th, when he walked out of Goldrush with the EPW championship around his waist.

Epwperth.com caught up with the newly crowned champion prior to the Monday Night Wrestling TV Tapings last weekend.

EPWPERTH.COM: Bobby, firstly congratulations on finally claiming the EPW championship.

MARSHALL: Thanks very much and let me just say that it's been a long time coming. Although, I might point out that I don't appreciate the way you used the word "finally". I do agree that I could've been the champ some time ago. However, due to circumstances outside of my control, that didn't end up happening. The past is past and the future is looking very bright indeed.

EPWPERTH.COM: What do you think made the differences to the other four championship matches that you lost?

MARSHALL
: OK, look. This better be the last time I ever have to go back on the last period of my life. I'm the champ, ok? Surely we should be talking about the future, not the past. It takes more then 3 seconds to win a wrestling match and the same can be said for losing one.
In each of my previous championship bouts I lost the smaller battles during the match. I got a over eager and tried to put my opponent away too early. Instead of focusing and taking my time on doing what was necessary to get the job done, I just tried to win. I've learned a lot of lessons in my time but thats probably the most important one. Do whatever you can to win the match and nothing else matters. Sure, god will probably judge me when its all said and done. But if I can achieve more then just getting nailed to a piece of wood, then maybe when my times up and I bust on through those pearly gates I'll be taking a seat on his right side for everything I've done. Results matter. How you get the resultsNot important. Just get it done.

EPWPERTH.COM: Now you claimed the belt in controversial circumstances. What do you have to say to those that think you are an undeserving champion?

MARSHALL: There is no way that anybody, anywhere can say that I'm an undeserving champion. Im the best champion this company has ever seen. I've wrestled the biggest stars in pro wrestling. I'm 6'4, 245 pounds and getting bigger every day. I live life like a champion! I AM A CHAMPION! To those people who say that I don't deserve to be champion, GET F#$@%*!
How's that? How about they take a look at my track record? Look at the great matches I've had? Think about the legacy I'm going to leave behind? This is not my peak. I will not stop until I am worshipped as being the greatest champion EPW has ever seen. I am the best wrestler in this country and for anybody to call me an undeserving champion is a disgrace. I'm mad. That makes me real mad. I'm sick of not being treated with respect. Winning this belt was supposed to change all that. Ill be damned if I'm not given the respect I deserve. Next question.

EPWPERTH.COM: You've recently added another member to your ever growing posse in JT. What is your interest in AZ & JT?

MARSHALL: Look, lets face it. America is beckoning me. I won't be in EPW forever so I'd like to leave a little something behind for people to remember me by. These 2 guys have great attitudes and unlimited potential. Look who they've aligned themselves with in the past? Chris Vice & Justin Sane? They weren't going anywhere with those guys. Under my tutelage the sky is the limit for these two boys. Just you wait and see.

EPWPERTH.COM: Another person whose company you've been seen in recently is the gorgeous Amber. Who is she to Bobby Marshall?

MARSHALL: She is one of the many benefits of being a great champion. She knew it was only a matter of time before the gold was around my waist. Thanks to her, that gold won't ever be lonely, if you know what I'm saying.

EPWPERTH.COM: You've finally achieved your goal. What now for Bobby Marshall?'

MARSHALL: As I said earlier, I'm on a mission to get respect. Not any old respect. Not the respect people have for an old man rotting away from some disease accepting his impending death. I'm talking about the respect people have for the men of this world who know what they want and just take it. I will win my respect with victory upon victory in the EPW ring. The days of Bobby Marshall not being able to get the job done are at an end. EPW can stop worrying about trying to find a #1 contender, but that doesn't mean I won't be putting this strap up for grabs. I will seek out my own desired opponents who I think will make the deepest notches in my bedpost so to speak. The stalwarts of EPW, the legendary figures who made this fed great, the best wrestlers from around Australia, anyone whom I deem has a legacy worth taking, I will offer them a chance at glory just so that I can crush them down and prove my worth. I will be the single greatest champion this town has ever seen and I will do that by destroying the men who are seen as being the best. The fans of Perth haven't seen anything yet.

EPWPERTH.COM

G'Day Mate, we've got great news...

Good News Australian wrestling fans, more specifically our Perth wrestling fans. In what can only be considered a shrewd move, Explosive Pro Wrestling, better known to you and I as NWA Pro's EPW or better yet, NWA Australia will now be broad-casted on Australian Air Waves. Dating back as far as 2001, the promotion that became EPW would become the premeire wrestling promotion in Perth. Most recently crowning the 1st Australian National Heavyweight Champion as recognized by the National Wrestling Alliance, since the late 1960s when the title was vacated. Truly Australian wrestling has been altered with the arrival of the NWA influence in EPW. And surely a sign of good things to come as EPW will be featured on Access 31. The official air date is set to debut on
January 14th, 2008. Never fear NWA Wrestling fans. Because there is talk of the show actually appearing via the Monday Night Wrestling website. The other win/win situation is that some matches that will be taped for the NWA Showcase will also air on the broadcast. And in the United States some matches from Australia will in fact air on the NWA Showcase. Essentially promoting the NWA Brand on 2 different continents at the same time. And giving Americans opportunity to see wrestlers like Shane Haste, Hartley Jackson, Bobby Marshall and the Australian Champion: Mikey Nicholls. And giving Australians the opportunity to see wrestlers like NWA National Champion(US): Pepper Parks, "El Exotico" Cassandro, the Young Bucks, Los Luchas, TJ Perkins, and Al Katrazz. And to become reintroduced to familar faces like Nicho el Millonario (Psicosis), and "Ironman" Rob Conway. Plus showcasing the world titles with NWA World Champion: "Scrap Iron" Adam Pearce, NWA World Tag Champs: The Real American Heroes, and NWA Womens Champion: Amazing Kong. This is truly a remarkable day for the NWA and could further prove to re-establish the NWA's truly International Spirit.
