Thoughts on SoCal Pro Wrestling's Collision Course 2011

SoCal Pro Wrestling presented Collision Course on Saturday May 14th from the Oceanside Boys and Girls Club.  I have only ever had a good time at the SoCal Pro shows and the streak would continue despite some disappointing news.  Off the very bat it was announced that "A Double" had some traveling issue and would not be in attendance tonight.

My heart instantly sunk.  Austin Aries is an amazing performer.  He's held the Ring of Honor World Title twice.  He'd had some of the best matches I've ever seen.  Aries beyond a shadow of a doubt is one of the greatest wrestlers walking today.  But I didn't hurt for me, for the fans at the show.  I really felt bad for SoCal Crazy.  Crazy has had some pretty good matches with a bevy of different opponents in SoCal.  He's wrestled for the NWA Worlds Title against Pearce, he was a Unified SoCal Pro/AWS Heavyweight Champion and has held countless titles.  But this match could have been something different, maybe an opportunity to show the naysayers that he is a top talent not only in this area, but in the United States.  And with no disrespect to anyone at SoCal Pro, but I didn't want to see Crazy taking on just anyone.

Enter Jaysin Strife.  Strife is probably about as under rated performer as SoCal Crazy.  Strife is from Iowa but has popped up in SoCal from time to time, wrestling in Mach-1 and various other promotions in in the state.  I had even seen him in the ring before, but Saturday Night... Strife brought his A-Game.  SoCal Crazy and Jaysin Strife made me shut up and listen.  Made me pay attention to what they did in the ring.  Strife isn't Austin Aries, but he put on one hell of a match with Crazy.  Strife brought out the very best in SoCal Crazy and the two had a match of the year candidate that night.

The night would also reveal new tag team champions with  2 Skinny White Guys (Nic Lovin and Peter Avalon) defeated Kid Caramba and Todd Chandler.  2 Skinny White Guys were on pace to winning these tag titles for months, first being screwed by the Ballard Brothers who would defeat the RockNES Monsters and then lose the titles to Chandler and Caramba.  Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana was able to deflate the "Mirror Image" Ricky Mandel, until Avalon and Lovin got involved.  And later in the night Mandel, Avalon, and Lovin would help Tommy Wilson retain the SoCal Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship.

Tommy had the difficult task of stuffing Hector Canales into a casket.  And although he had help from his compadres, it was a very difficult task.  Canales was obviously not happy with Wilson and wanted to end his title reign, much like the way Wilson ended his.  Canales however was just out numbered and was sealed in a Casket following a "Megastar" Super Kick.

The complete results of the Collision Course 2011 can be found at SoCalUNCENSORED.com.  Clearly SoCal Pro Wrestling continues to present some of the best wrestling in Southern California. SoCal Pro returns to action Friday, June 10, 2011 and Saturday, June 11, 2011 will be The 1st Annual SoCal Pro Tournament to be held in Escondido, CA. The SoCal Pro Tournament will feature sixteen wrestlers trying to advance and become the winner in this two-night event.

NWA World Champion Pearce grants re-match against Mandel

Adam Pearce will put his NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship on the line against Ricky Mandel at New Years Retribution on January 15th.  But Pearce begs the question... will the Sheik return to Oceanside?

Dec 4, 2010

NWA Worlds Champion attacked In Oceanside, California at SoCal Pro Wrestling.

BREAKING NEWS...

Oceanside, California.

On a night when "Scrap Iron" Adam Pearce would look to successfully defend his National Wrestling Alliance Worlds Championship for the 20th time against "The Mirror Image" Ricky Mandel in front of a the fans of Oceanside Boys and Girls Club.  Pearce and Mandel would battle back and forth during the Semi-Main Event of SoCal Pro Wrestling's Redemption  And it would seem that the Worlds Champion would leave Oceanside in tact, when NWA North American Champion The Sheik would storm ring side and begin to attack Adam Pearce.  Targeting and perhaps re-injuring the shoulder of "Scrap Iron" the Sheik locked in the infamous Camel Clutch.  No word yet if this attack will affect the scheduled title defenses Adam Pearce has in Hollywood California, Wednesday December 8th for the NWA Championship Wrestling from Hollywood and  for West Coast Wrestling Connection, in Portland Oregon against Aaron Bolo on Saturday the 11th and against Quiz in Springfield Oregon on Sunday the 12th.

Review of the NWA Pro/SoCal Rumble In Oceanside Oct. 16th 2010

How are you going to top this one Jeff?  Is what I heard as I walked through the hallway of the Oceanside Boys and Girls Club and it definitely go me thinking.  How does SoCal Pro find a way to draw such a large gathering to its monthly offerings.  Announced a few weeks prior to the 16th, SoCal Pro would be out the very popular RockNES Monsters.  I thought at the very least, their might be a drop off in attendance, but the crowd seemed pretty unaffected by.  Perhaps it was the SoCal Pro Rumble that got them there. or maybe folks were there to say good-bye to Chimera, regardless of what got them to the show, it was a hot crowd.

Kid Caramba returned to SoCal Pro in a match up with Angel Santos.  Caramba seems to get a large face reaction.  I'm not sure when the Kid started for SoCal Pro or where he started his training, but he is quickly becoming one of the crowds' favorite.  Santos continues to hold only disdain for the crowd and coincidentally that's how the crowd responds to him.  Santos is starting to get better with his ring presence.  I was really bothered the last time I watched him, because of his inability to make eye contact with the fans ringside.  I think he has worked on it.  He looked at a couple of fans and told them to shut up.  Which makes his heel shtick seem much more believable.  I don't have any complaints about his in ring work.  I think he has been progressing each show and you can see it..  And it is no disrespect to Caramba, but he looks young and fairly new in the ring.  But he too looks like he has really improved.  His connection to the crowd will really help him advance a long the way.  I sometimes feel that when I'm at a show, I would see the same match if it were 20 people or 200 people, but I don't think that is a successful formula.  Each match should be more unique.  There should be interaction with the live crowd.  The ability to get the fan to react what you do in the ring is nearly as important as your move-set.  In contrary fashion, both did a great job of connecting with the fans.  Santos walked away with the victory, but it wouldn't be the last we'd see of Caramba.

Originally scheduled to be a #1 Contenders Tag Team Match, "Lovin" Nic Lovin and partner Ric Ellis took on The Todd Chandler and Matt Twizted.  Twizted substituted for Aerial Star and had teamed with Chandler last month against Anchors Away.  Last month, Rick Ellis worked along side "Megastar" Tommy Williams and "Pretty" Peter Avalon in the opening six man tag.  Also last month, Nic Lovin got a victory over Kid Caramba with help from Avalon.  So going into this match there wasn't a clear cut favorite.  I believe Avalon would have made a better choice to team with "Lovin" but again he was another guy who was missed on this show.  But Ellis worked his butt off to help take your mind off of it.  Chandler and Twizted went back and forth a lot with Ellis and Lovin.  I enjoy watching Chandler quite a bit.  His offense is pretty crisp.  And some of his strikes in the corner look down right painful.  Ellis got the pin on Twizted.  And Lovin tried to place his pink cape on Ellis.  The dichotomy of Ellis iceman like personality and Nic Lovin's effervescence leads to quite the odd couple and could prove to be problematic for the reining tag team champions, the RockNES Monsters.

The next match of the night was certainly a high light for the fans at the Boys and Girls Club.  Originally scheduled to be a Tag Team bout of The Ballard Brothers versus The Lucha Express (SoCal Crazy and Chimaera), in what was to be Chimaera's final match, was changed for the better.  Pleasantly surprised was I when Johnny Paradise joining the Ballard Brothers as for one night only as Johnny Ballard (which is fitting, because he is billed from Cananda) taking on Crazy, Chimaera, and B-Boy.  I had seen B-Boy hundreds of times through out the years.  But never saw him in the heyday in San Diego, I guess this is about as close as I would get to that.  And I really enjoy SoCal Crazy's work.  There is no wonder for me why he appears in just about every indy in SoCal and Tijuana.  At the last show, Paradise and Crazy went toe-to-toe in a match that would spill out to the floor.  The bad blood between the two, have kept both of them out of contention for the SoCal Pro Title.  B-Boy's antics to start the show were pretty amusing, threatening to put the Canadian Flag down his shorts, driving the Ballards insane.  Eventually Chimaera would be the one to bury the flag in his pants.  Which got a great reaction out of the crowd.  Once the wrestling got serious, it was a pretty high impact match.  Referee distractions, goading their opponents into the ring, and sneak attacks to his partners kept Chimaera mostly on the wrong side of town being taken advantage of the sneaky Ballards.  When Chimaera did make the hot tag, B-Boy took over.  Using some weird forms of a Jedi Mind Trickery, a creative move-set and his opponents slow reactions, B-Boy got Shane and Shannon to hit moves on each other.  Like with an Ace Crusher that really had to be seen to believed.  B-Boy's fun didn't last long as Johnny would help even the odds.  And then it became all about the spots.  Crazy and Chimaera diving over and through the ropes to on awaiting heels.  B-Boys running dropkick into the corner as Crazy dives across the ring.  Chimaera is able to get the pinfall.  And after a brief celebration with SoCal Crazy and B-Boy, Chimaera stands alone in the ring and thanks the crowd.  A real classy moment for SoCal Pro.

Just when you think the announcement for  intermission would be called, Ricky Mandel comes out and demands his match with "El Chido" start right now.  The Oceanside Street Fight.  The last time these two squared off in the ring the rules were extremely relaxed.  Last month Canales finally cashed in and became champion of SoCal Pro at the expense of his former compadre, Mandel.  There fight circled the Boys and Girls Club gym before getting back into this ring for the finish.  This match would Mirror many of the same qualities of the last show.  Mandel was already geared up for the match.  Canales would essentially come to the ring in a pair of jeans.  The match didn't take long before it spilled into the ring.  A fan near ring side supplied a few unusual weapons to Canales, a Halloween Prop Butcher Knife that was busted into over the head of Mandel.  As the action spilled out into the crowd, all hell broke lose.  Canales in control would toss Mandel into the gym's concrete walls and stomp him around the arena.  The action again would circle the gym floor before ending up back in the ring.  But while on the floor a ladder came into play when Mandel took the upper hand and crashed the ladder on top of Canales.  The action became more increasingly difficult to watch because of where they wound up, but eventually Mandel would emerge with Canales in tow to the Merchandise stable, when Mandel would attempt to use a bag of chips to block Canales nose and mouth.  Once Canales was shoved into the ring, Mandel would toss a Chucky doll into the ring and would settle on a miniature scarecrow as his weapon of choice.  Now I don't want to be negative, but these choices of weapons were pretty weak.  I understand this is a family show, but my only complaint about this match is that a toy knife and a scarecrow are not adequate weapons.  You'd do more damage with your fists and feet than those things.  There was also supposed to be a spot where Canales would be handcuffed to the ropes and Mandel would beat him with a cane.  The only problem is the handcuffs never really stayed on and Canales had to try to make the cuffs work.  Eventually they would give up on the damn things and focus on beating each other some more.  Again there was a ton of intensity in the match and the crowd ate it up.  But the choice of weapons and the handcuff spot being blown kind of brought the match down for me.  Hector would pull off the victory with a Spinebuster type maneuver.  The post match celebration was pretty amazing though.  The show went to intermission and fans entered the ring side area to take pictures with and get autographs from the champ.  It was really impressive how many fans were flocking to the champion.  And it wasn't just kids, it was entire families, and adults as well.  Which kind of shows you the environment SoCal Pro is creating in Oceanside and just how over Canales is right now for them.

The 20 Man Over the Top Rope SoCal Rumble was honestly a sigh to be seen.  When the video is released this will be the match you want to check out.  Much of the roster returned for the final.  The Rumble was patterned after the Royal Rumble.  Johnny Paradise drew number one and put up a great showing.  Jason Redondo drew number 2.  There were also a couple of debuts at the show, Duke, Syn, Dragon Force Kid, and Ryan Kidd.  The four newcomers to SoCal Pro were brutalized in the ring.  I'm not sure if this was some sort of freshman hazing, but you can tell the vets were having some fun with the new faces.  Early on Tommy Wilson was eliminated by Jason Redondo, but the referees ringside missed it.  And Tommy was able to sneak back into the ring and eliminate Redondo.  As the ring filled up, the action would migrate to either of the four corners of the ring and allowing the center of the ring to showcase action.  When Scorpio Sky entered the ring, he went right after Paradise.  It is the little things like that, that makes matches like this more exciting.  After Paradise was eliminated, Wilson ripped the mask off of SoCal Crazy and threw it over the top rope.  Which had Crazy leaping over the top after his mask.  That got a pop out of me, hadn't seen that before.  The Final Showdown came to Mandel, Wilson, and Kid Caramba.  Wilson and Mandel took this opportunity to punish Caramba.  And after it look like Caramba couldn't take anymore, Mandel held the Kid and Tommy lined up for his Mega Kick.  With the bulls-eye all over Caramba, Kid Caramba was able to dodge what would have ended Caramba's time in the rumble, forcing Mandel over the top.  An apologetic Tommy repeated said sorry to Mandel and promised to do it for THEM.  Caramaba had one of his familiar bursts of energy and attempted to toss Tommy over the top.  Caramba convinced he was the new #1 Contender celebrated overcoming such adversity.  And the fans were eating it up.  Unfortunately for Caramba and the fans in attendance, The Megastar was able to get back into the ring and launch the youngster over the top.  The Megastar Tommy Wilson briefly celebrated until Jason Redondo came out and we had a short scuffle.

Overall I had a great time at the show.  I think SoCal Pro has put on another great show and I am looking forward to their next show on December 4th.  For more photos of the show, check out our facebook page.

Review of SoCal Pro's Super Clash 2010

This would mark the 4th time this year I would make the trek down the 5 South to Mission Blvd. to make my way to the Oceanside Boys and Girls Club. I have been yet to be disappointed by a single show put on by SoCal Pro and and last night was no different. SoCal Pro's SuperClash is one of the biggest pro-wrestling events in Oceanside California.

In the opening bout, the SoCal Pro Tag Team Champions, RockNES Monsters joined Jason Redondo to take on the tag team of "Pretty" Peter Avalon, Ric Ellis, and "Megastar" Tommy Wilson.  No doubt about it, RockNES Monsters have the crowd eating out of their hands.  From the moment the rock version of Tetris hits the airwaves the crowd surrenders their loyalty to the Johnnies, Goodtime and Yuma.  And for their loyalty, the fans are rewarded with spectacular double teams and creative aerial assaults.  Conversely, everything Goodtime and Yuma do for the crowd, "Pretty" Peter does the opposite.  Where the RockNES Monsters lure the crowd in with their charisma, Avalon's charisma chases the fanbase away.  And the "Megastar" somehow, someway, has created a small but vocal fanbase, which were adamant about Tommy Wilson not being a "Mega-Turd."  The Melee that unfolded after the bell rang was something out of a street fight.  Referee Everett Scott was completely ineffective in keeping the action in the ring.  Often being sat on top of the turnbuckle by Wilson.  The action spilled out of the ring very early and spent most of the time out there.  Ellis, Avalon, and Redondo were all nailed with a dangerous, yet tactical double dive from the Monsters than laid out the entire crowd.  It was followed up with a "Megastar" dive on the wreckage of bodies.  Wilson had taken control of the match and looked nearly undefeatable.  That is until the RockNES Monsters hit their patent Ace Crusher/Brain Kick on Wilson and completely changed the momentum of the match.  Redondo was able to capitalize on the dazed Wilson and get the 1-2-3.  A disgusted Avalon abandoned the post match Wilson leaving Ellis looking like the child caught in the middle of a parent argument.  This match could have easily been the main event of most wrestling shows, but this was the opener.  It certainly got the crowd fired up and the action was really intense.

The next match of the night was Angel Santos, taking on Aerial Star.  Santos certainly didn't win over the crowd with his threats of bodily harm to the fans ring side.  This is the second time I've seen Santos wrestle and my only complaint about him is that he doesn't seem to make eye contact with anyone.  I really thought he wrestled much better in this match than the previous one I had seen him in, but it seems he goes out of his way to avoid eye contact.  Aerial Star is Aerial Star.  He puts on a great match taking a couple of high risk maneuvers and attempts to get the crowd into his matches.  I like Star, I'd like to see more of him.  These two put on a good fight, but tonight it looked like Santos was going to take that upset.  Star ate a lot of offense from Santos, even hitting a fireman's carry to a gut buster.  Santos got the near fall, but the victory would go to Aerial Star who racked up yet another victory in SoCal Pro.

Next up was the tag team match up featuring Matt Twizted and Todd Chandler going up against Anchors Away.  Anchors Away maybe underrated as a tag team.  They have some unique offense.  Stone and Jones really put the hurt on Twizted early on.  And Chandler's offense was cut short due to the effective tag team wrestling that Anchors are known for.  Although it wasn't announced as anything more than a tag team match, I think the Anchors are on their way for a showdown with Anchors Away.  The finish came when the Anchors combined for their tag team finish.  One scary moment during the match when a double teamed Todd Chandler look legitimately hurt after an Anchors Away dragon suplex.

The long storied rivalry between Johnny Paradise and SoCal Crazy started in Rowland Heights California.  While Crazy was the reigning champion of SoCal Pro, Paradise was the reigning champion of AWS.  The two would have a title for title match in which Crazy uprooted Paradise and won his championship making Crazy a duel champion in California.  The rivalry would continue even to the end of AWS when both men would eliminate each other out of the 149 Person Battle Royal.  To say these two have bad blood would be an understatement.  Crazy much like RockNES Monsters have the crowds admiration.  And rightfully so, his ring work.  Crazy would gain the upper hand early in the match up when Paradise who was waiting for him in the ring was shocked by Crazy entering through the crowd and hitting a flying drop kick of the top rope.  Crazy kept his early advantage through out most of the match.  His combination of high flying hitting offense kept Paradise off his feet.  A diving clothesline from Crazy toppled both he and Paradise over the top rope and on to the floor.  Referee Chris Massie would reach a 10 count, but that wouldn't stop Paradise in continuing his assault on SoCal Crazy.  Paradise would re-enter the ring and demand to be named the victor because in his words "I'm still standing, he isn't!"  Paradise would attempt to continue the assault when Aerial Star, Chandler, and Twizted would come to his rescue and help him to the back.

After a brief intermission the show returned with the new attitude of Nic Lovin.  No longer so loving, Nic Lovin who starting to resemble a much skinnier version of Necro the Butcher.  Lovin accepted the challenge of Kid Caramba.  Kid Caramba is certainly not a seasoned veteran, but has the ability to connect with the crowd.  Nic Lovin was able to dish out a lot of offense early on.  But the Kid was able to quickly rebound and take Lovin to task.  Only after interference from Peter Avalon, did Nic Lovin recoup and steal a victory from Caramba.

The first of two main events, had to be quickly reshuffled, when Chimera who had fallen ill and was told by doctors to "sit this one out."  Feeling in for Chimera was Locura, who was hoping to best NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion, "Scrap Iron" Adam Pearce.  I never had seen Locura before and I was really impressed with his abilities in the ring.  Pearce the season veteran was certainly at a disadvantage in this match up, as his preparation had been for Chimera and I'm sure registered a complaint with Bob Trobich and the National Wrestling Alliance for the bait and switch in opponents.  And it may seem that Locura may be following www.alliance-wrestling.com because he was well aware of the rotator-cuff injury Pearce is suffering from.  A lot of extensive arm work from Locura to start the match off.  Deep arm-drags into arm bars, kept the World Champion off his feet.  Locura was smart to wear Pearce's arm down.  Locura also mostly stayed grounded during the match, which seems a little out of the ordinary from what I've been told about Locura.  The thing about Adam Pearce is he can really get a crowd worked up.  Some people do not appreciate the nuances of getting a crowd into a match, but Adam just seems to know the precise timing to shout at a fan or make a gesture to get the crowd back into a match.  Pearce perhaps spent a little too much time jaw-jacking with the crowd then concentrating on Locura.  And a couple of times Locura looked to have Pearce defeated.  Once having Adam pinned, with the champ having the ring presence to put his foot on the rope and another time when Locura had him in a submission only to have Pearce find the ropes again.  Pearce a couple of times looked to hit the infamous Superfly Splash made famous by Jimmy Snuka, both times, Pearce was caught climbing to the top.  The match ended almost as abruptly as it began, when Pearce was able to hit his signature piledriver.  Another fun match with Pearce.

In the main event, history was made at the Oceanside Boys and Girls Club, and if you've been following SoCal Pro closely at all, you are more than aware of the tension that has been brewing between Ricky Mandel and Hector Canales.  Former tag team partners.  Former SoCal Pro Tag Team Champions.  Mandel and Canales used to be like brothers.  But that all changed when Ricky Mandel employed the services of one C. Edward Vanderpyle.  Vanderpyle known as the manager of champions did infact manage Mandel to the SCP Heavyweight Championship.  But at the cost of destroying the friendship between Canales and Mandel.  Canales would hunt for an opportunity to seek his vengeance on his former partner through out the past few months, only to finally get him in a one-on-one match up for the SCP Heavyweight Championship.  It seemed the odds were heavily stacked against Canales before the bell ever rang, when Tommy Wilson returned to ring side along with Vanderpyle and Mandel to add some color commentating to the match up.  Early on the shenanigans of Vanderpyle would lead to Mandel getting the upper hand.  The back and forth in the ring would eventually spill out to the crowd, after Referee Everett Scott got caught with a splash into the corner..  Mandel, clutching had the head of Canales, empties one section of seating to toss his one time partner into the seats.  Canales would turn the table and throw Mandel over the security barricade and on to the plastic folding chairs.  Referee Scott still out of it as Canales would throw Mandel into another set of chairs on the outside.  Even making their way to the SoCal Pro Merchandise (which still has the SoCal Pro Collecion of Action Figures, all 5 for $40.  Perfect Stocking Stuffers).  Canales even launched Mandel into the wall where his face connected with a poster featuring his face for said action figures.  The melee on the outside would wind up back in the ring and would lead to Canales winning the SCP Heavyweight Title.  And just as Tommy Wilson entered the ring ready to lay waste to the victor.  But out came the RockNES Monsters followed by the NWA World Champion, wielding a chair to the rescue.  I was almost certain Adam was going to use that chair on Canales, but to his credit, he was there for the celebration.  And a celebration did ensue after the match.  The faces of the locker room emptied bringing a little bubbly and beer to the ring.  And between the champagne showers, Canales invited Mandel the opportunity to face him again at the SoCal Pro next show.  During all of this fans around the ring entered to join the party.
