Viva La Lucha's Champions and Challengers featuring talent from NWA Pro Wrestling

The 4th Edition of the Viva La Lucha PPV Series Champions and Challengers debuted last night on iNDEMAND through out the United States.  All of the NWA Heritage Titles will be on the line at this event, along with a big match up featuring former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Blue Demon Jr.  Playing all month on PPV in the U.S. and Canada before it even hits TV in Mexico.

On the last installment of Viva La Lucha PPV, Pro Wrestling Revolution's (NWA Pro Wrestling Affiliate) Heavyweight Championship was decided when Oliver John squared off against Blue Demon Jr.  Blue Demon Jr. was successful in defeating his long time nemesis Oliver John and taking away his Revolution Heavyweight Championship.  On Champions and Challengers, Oliver John faces off against that rising star of Inoki Genome Federation, Atsushi Sawada in this international match up.

Also on the card will be a 4 Way War to determine the #1 contender to the PWR Jr. Heavyweight Title

Another big title defense will be for the NWA Heritage Tag Team Titles.  The Champs have been heavily featured on NWA Championship Wrestling from Hollywood as the RockNES Monsters have maintained their championship reigns with some of the best tag teams in Southern California.  On the 4th Edition of Viva La Lucha they will face off against former NWA World Tag Team Champions Los Luchas.  When these two teams face off you know it will be a fast paced and lots of fun tag team wrestling.  Think a modern day Rock 'n' Roll Express vs. Midnight Express. 

And the Main Event for Champions and Challengers, The revolution Heavyweight Champion Blue Demon squares off against El Generico to see who will advance in the IWL Title Tournament in Mexico.  Blue Demon Jr. has been looking to extend his championship legacy as of late.  Ring of Honor's El Generico already having establishing a name for himself in Canada and the United States is looking to build his legacy on the legendary Blue Demon name. 

Complex forging of [NWA Worlds Champion] Adam Pearce

On the surface, that might make “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce sound like something of a walking paradox. But as you peel away the layers, you understand it's more a matter of Pearce not fitting any one category.


“I was voted ‘Class Non-Conformist’ my senior year because I kind of did things as I wanted, and authority was the one thing I seemed to always have issues with. I guess some things never change,” Pearce told SLAM! Wrestling.

Canoe--Slam is one of the best websites dedicated to wrestling. And although its a Canadian website, they've got pro-wrestling in the US covered. Although the article talks heavily about his duties in ROH, it gives a great recap of the career of Adam Pearce and a lead into the next title defense at the NWA Legends Fan Fest against Bryan Danielson. If Pearce is successful in his defense this Saturday he will be defending against the winner of the Legends Cup the following night.  It should be also noted that the World Champion is scheduled to appear at NWA Southwest, a mere week away from Saturday.  I also found it interesting to read about Pearce's early days, getting opportunities to work in Europe, his time at the Power Plant, and his rise in the NWA.  I almost forgot that Adam Pearce appeared in the NWA Sanctioned New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Bryan Danielson signs deal with WWE!!!

I was pleased and a little sadden to hear the announcement regarding Bryan Danielson and his free agency. Now that the American Dragon is an exclusive WWE wrestler he'll join the likes of CM Punk and Matt Sydal as wrestlers who joined the WWE after working in Ring of Honor. Danielson had held the short-lived Pure Wrestling title and the ROH World title.

Danielson's in-ring work is amazing. And with a list of trainers that include William Regal, NWA Hall of Famer Bobby Eaton, WWE Legend Shawn Michaels, Masato Tanaka, and Tracy Smothers there is no doubt that his style is a lot different from the typical WWE style.

I have followed Bryan Danielson career fairly closely. I was in attendance the night Bryan Danielson defeated APW Internet Heavyweight Champion Super Dragon. I was also in attendance the night that Bryan Danielson was so close to defeating NJPW Jr. Heavyweight Champion HEAT for his title. Dragon has always put on great matches whether he was in the main event or opening the show. With a plethora of opponents.

The American Dragon started his career with the Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy. Danielson started at that school with other notable names as former WWE stars Brian Kendrick, Paul London, and Lance Cade, TNA wrestler Shawn Hernandez and former TNA wrestler Matt Bentley. Danielson made his first appearance in Japan teaming with Lance Cade for FMW. Danielson spent a lot of time in the WWE farm system originally in Memphis Championship Wrestling. It was after the MCW experience that Bryan Danielson began working Independent Dates across the United States and Canada. Danielson appeared for APW's King of the Indies and work in many promotions from All Pro Wrestling to EPIC, NWA ECCW, Ring of Honor, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, NJPW/USA, New Japan Pro Wrestling, NOAH, FIP, and far too many to mention. While wining championships across the World, Danielson established his name as one of the greatest of our era. Unfortunately Danielson was booked in 2 Matches that I always wanted to see, but they were never meant to be. Bryan Danielson, who at the time was more commonly referred to as American Dragon was team take on Ultimo Dragon and Southern California Indy sensation Super Dragon in a battle of the Dragons. The match never happened due to complications with the wrestling promoter. Dragon was also supposed to battle Brent Albright for the NWA World Title. Unfortunately that match never happened either. Danielson was injured the week before in a ROH World Title match and forfeited his spot to would be champion, Adam Pearce. So although its great to see Danielson head to the WWE, I will miss his action in the NWA, PWG, and ROH. Here's hoping to the best for the American Dragon! Cheers.

Training Seminar with ROH World Champion Jerry Lynn

NWA Dynamo Pro Wrestling returns to Ottawa, Kansas on May 23rd with a World Champion in tow. One of the hardest working men in professional wrestling today, Jerry Lynn. NWA Week in Review for Mar. 28th

In the infamous words of Poppa Cal, better late than never, the Alliance proudly brings to you this Week In Review for March 28th, 2009.

All thought a celestial down pour prevented the Alternative Wrestling Show from holding their 7th Anniversary Spectacular, the AWS still moves on. The big news from AWS is a crowning of a new Women's Championship. Already scheduled to participate in the tournament are "The New York Knockout" Nikki, Morgan, Carla Jade, Marissa Lopez, Erica D' Erico, Ellen Degenerate, Candice LaRae, Kittana Vera, and Aiden Riley, with three more names to be announced. Morgan and Erico work regularly for NWA Arizona's IZW. The rest are pretty regular of Southern California. But that isn't the only announcement for AWS as the Alternative Wrestling Show will be holding a show in Burbank, which is an alternative to their Rowland Heights location. (see what I did there.) The Burbank show is to be a part of the Hollywood Show Convention. And lastly the AWS will in fact hold the Anniversary Show at its home at the AWS on Sunday April the 19th.

At Ring Of Honor's "Take No Prisoneers" on April 4th, our worlds champion Blue Demon Jr. steps into Ring of Honor. Demon battles Nigel McGuinness, in an International Tag Team Match. McGuinness joins Claudio Castagnoli to battle Demon and Brent Albright. This will be the 3rd NWA Worlds Champion to appear in front of a ROH audience.

Speaking of wrestling Royalty the relationship with Jerry Lawler and NWA Main Event is in full bloom. Lawler's last appearance in NWA Main Event drew crowd of over 1300 in Kentucky.

Ultimate NWA has announced it will start running again and will be crowning new tag team champions.

NWA Pro Wrestling Revolution has stripped Tag Team Champion Rey Misterio for not being able to make events and the announcement will be made soon.

Lastly "In 2009, ECCW Pro-Wrestling will partner with SHARE Family & Community Services for the first Wrestling With Hunger event. Twenty wrestlers will take part in a 72 hour show in Port Coquitlam, BC with the goal of restocking the food bank shelves and set the world’s record for the longest wrestling show ever!" This is a great positive event for wrestling and I hope more NWA members follow suit.

And your NEW Worlds Heavyweight Champion!!!

On Saturday September 20th at the Ring of Honor Pay Per View, "Glory By Honor" Adam Pearce defeated Brent Albright to regain the legendary 10lbs. of gold. Adam locked Brent in the Crowbar and forced the submission. This marks the second time the title has changed hands in Ring of Honor. This also marks the second time that Adam Pearce has worn the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship.

Alliance reader WhatInTheH informed that I mistakenly posted that the NWA Worlds Title match took place on the Ring of Honor pay per view, "Glory By Honor." The Pay Per View was taped the night before.

New Worlds Heavyweight Champion

A New Worlds Heavyweight Champion -- a phrase that hasn't been uttered in over 330 days.
The last time those words were spoken, they had to be translated from Spanish to English. The last time that phrase was spoken, the same two competitors: Adam Pearce and Brent Albright were battling for the legendary 10lbs. of gold in front of a sell out crowd in Puerto Rico. That night saw the Scrap Iron bested the Shooter. Last night it wasn't the case.

For the first time in New York, the Worlds title changed hands. But the journey that landed Albright for this quest was a long winding road. Wrestling in the short lived Pro Wrestling Iron, trips to Pro Wrestling NOAH, a tenure in Ohio Valley where he was the 1st wrestler to hold of 3 titles of the promotion. Many were not sure what to think when his cup of coffee was finished with the WWE, but Albright bounced back debuting for Ring of Honor. Where the friendship of Albright and Pearce manifested into the Hangmen 3. Albright and Pearce's friendship ultimately ended when Pearce won the Worlds title in Puerto Rico. And nearly 1 year later, Albright fulfilled his promise to win the Championship.
And now Albright's future holds an open challenge in Chicago, Illinois on August 15. No one has accepted the open challenge. But everyone at the Alliance would like to congratulate the New Champion on his victory.

Clash of the Champions...

It all happened so fast. 'Scrap Iron' Adam Pearce has been World Champion for nearly a year now, all the while being a contracted Ring of Honor employee. The final four of the Worlds Title tournament were all contracted ROH wrestlers; Pearce, Bryan Danielson, Brent Albright, and Claudio Castagnoli. Immediately there was controversy in regards to Ring of Honor recognizing or even allowing the NWA title to be seen on their shows or pending Pay Per Views. It was understood at that point that ROH wouldn't be affiliating themselves with the NWA. Pearce would be the man to fill the vacated NWA Worlds Championship, and his title wouldn't be seen in ROH until June 6th 2008. Where he finally show his hand, in nailing Albright with a briefcase containing the NWA World Championship. Following the June 7th event in Philadelphia, a statement was issued. "What a glorious debut of a true belt with honor," Sweeney said. "Right on PPV I threw it in the face of ROH officials. I pulled out the belt they are afraid of because they know it's more prestigious. From Lou Thesz to Giant Baba to Terry Funk to Harley Race to Ric Flair to Adam Pearce, no belt in the history of wrestling has a prouder lineage. Now its under my control."

A match has been signed for June 27th that will pit Nigel McGuinness against Adam Pearce, title versus title. For your enjoyment, here is a video of Pearce and tag team partner Shane Hagadorn versus Ruckus and Jigshaw.

An Interview with the Machine Gun.

It is well documented the success of the National Wrestling Alliance has been on an up-turn as of late. Carrying on the legacy of yesterdays legends, are the names of the future. Karl Anderson, the Machine Gun is one of the many that are carrying on the history and tradition of the oldest wrestling alliance in the World. In this interview we discuss the NWA British Common Wealth Championship, his involvement in the NWA 57th Anniversary Show, the tag team the “Real American Heroes” and what will be coming next from this super star.

JAY CAL: The man you beat for the NWA British Common Wealth Championship was Fergal Devitt, who is now, a very successful Junior Heavyweight currently wrestling in Japan with NJPW. The man who defeated you for that title, Alex Koslov is now wrestling in championship bouts in Mexico in CMLL. And as it is well known you are one of the top tier wrestlers in the National Wrestling Alliance. Can you share your feelings about the British Common Wealth Championship and its impact on your career?

MACHINE GUN: Honestly man, and I don't mean any disrespect to the current British Commonwealth Champion, Paul Tracey who is a good friend of mine, but I think that belt was lucky to even be worn by the guys that wore it. I don't mean that in a cocky way at all, I just mean that the belt happened to be on Fergal Devitt when he decided to come to the New Japan Dojo in Santa Monica. I happen to be there when Fergal signed his contract, and so the belt was put on me. Alex Koslov happened to also be attending the dojo at that time and was able to win the belt from me. The belt didn't do anything for my career because it was only defended in front of about 20 people every Sunday! And that is a shoot. It is a BEAUTIFUL belt, don't get me wrong, but it's not like that thing elevated me in anyway. And talk about Fergal and Alex. Those guys are two of my best friends in the World. They worked hard as hell to receive the success that they are having. From training at the dojo everyday and being broke as shit and being told lies that we were all going to go to Japan. It was a long, tough road and those two guys are doing awesome and THEY ARE RICH now!!!! So good for them

JAY CAL: In terms of high profile matches, one of your first was at the NWA 57th Anniversary Show. You wrestled Scott Murray. This match was said to be the match that got you discovered by NWA Pro officials. How did you feel about that match and did you think wrestling at this show, would later afford you the opportunities you’ve received since?
MACHINE GUN: Yea, you're right. This was probably the most important match of my career up to this point. I was hooked up on this show by the promoter of the short-lived NWA Indy named Rob Williams. I thought for sure that this would be a great opportunity.... Until I got to the show! Which was the BIGGEST CLUSTER-FUCK of a show I had EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!! 15 matches on the card in front of about 50-75 people. I looked around at a lot of the other guys on the show, and thought to myself "Get me the fuck out of here!"
I happened to have a good match. Dave Marquez happened to be in the crowd and Mr. Marquez worked his magic on me and talked me into moving out to Los Angeles. That was 2 years ago. And the first year that I moved to LA I would say I thought that I made the worst decision of my life. But after sticking it out and making a lot of friends, this past year has been the MOST beneficial of my entire career for sure. So I guess if you put it into perspective, then absolutely that match that I had at the Anniversary show was a big turning point in my life.

JAY CAL: The next super-card I want to talk about is the highly successful The Copa De Lucha, which was a huge hit for the NWA Pro. In what was seemingly your National debut as a tag team with Joey Ryan saw you defeat some of the best tag teams of the NWA; what did winning the Cup, mean to you?
MACHINE GUN: Actually, to be completely factual we DID NOT win the cup.... The dirty Mexicans beat us for the cup in Las Vegas! But we stole the cup back from them at later TV tapings.

JAY CAL: Oh yeah, I must have been a little confused on that. Speaking of The Real American Heroes, you and the Magnum were formed earlier this year. Joey, aside from competing regularly from Pro Wrestling Guerrilla was teaming with Disco Machine on MTV’s take on Wrestling, WSX. As that 70’s Team, Joey Ryan adopted his sleazy look. What were the events that lead up to your meeting Joey Ryan and later teaming together for the NWA?
MACHINE GUN: I had met Joey a couple of times and even wrestled him at the Dojo out in Santa Monica. And to be honest that match we had was one of the funniest matches I have ever been involved in. And Actually I have to give Dave Marquez credit for putting Joey and I together. After our first match teaming together I think we both realized that we had a lot of chemistry and that our styles of wrestling are very similar. Marquez put us together and we just ran with it.

JAY CAL: Aside from your tag team success, you won the NWA Midwest Heartland States Heavyweight Champion. At the same time you defeated the Human Tornado to with the NWA Pro/Empire Wrestling Federation’s American Heavyweight Championship. This was in the midst of the NWA re-crowning a New Worlds Champion. Your pleas to be invited to participate in this tournament fell on deaf ears while you were a double champion. How did you feel about not getting a tournament spot?
MACHINE GUN: Politics, just strictly, ridiculous politics. Look at some of those guys in that tournament and tell me that I didn't deserve a spot?! [It’s] unbelievable. But either way, I am one half of the NWA World Tag Team Champions. So, now at least my pay days are sweeter than some of the losers in that tournament!!!!

JAY CAL: It seemed that you got somebody’s attention. Because it wasn’t long after the tag team titles were declared vacant that Joey and yourself, along with the Kidman/Waltman tandem, and Sicodelico Jr. and Incognito were allowed to share an opportunity to be the next Worlds Tag Team Championships. You and Joey were able to over-come the gauntlet and win the tag team titles. Could you explain what impact that made on your professional and personally?
MACHINE GUN: It was sweet man. You know, I grew up in Ashville, North Carolina … the home of the NWA. I grew up watching NWA on TBS my whole life. I watched Arn and Tully. My idol was Ric Flair. And to be a co-holder of the same belts that those guys won? Man that is sweet. No matter what all the haters have to say, I am a champion, and they are not!

JAY CAL: So your successes in the NWA have afforded you other opportunities in the wrestling realm. You debuted for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla earlier this year and recently joined the Ring of Honor Ranks. What are your ambitions in the wrestling world? Where would you like to be next?
MACHINE GUN: I just want to keep moving up. Every year for me has been better. Every year I move up. I have made A LOT of plane flights this year. A lot of wrestlers would KILL to be flown somewhere, put in a hotel and then get paid to wrestle! I am very fortunate to be in the spot that I am in, in the NWA. I am fortunate to have gotten into Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. I am very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to work for Ring of Honor in Las Vegas and San Francisco. I just want to keep moving up and keep doing everything that I can to get as far as I can in this business.

JAY CAL: Is there anything else you’d like to share with the readers of this interview?
MACHINE GUN: SUPPORT INDY WRESTLING. SUPPORT WRESTLING IN GENERAL. GO TO LOCAL WRESTLING SHOWS and cheer for your favorites and boooo the wrestlers that you don't like! I blew my knee out in front of 15 people wrestling for free 4 years ago! Wrestlers go in the ring night in and night out and put it all out there for the fans! Just show some support and keep the “You fucked up” chants to yourself, or meet us outside and get fucked up yourself! Thanks for the interview!!!!

JAY CAL: Karl, I have to thank you for the interview. 2007 has been a tremendous year for you and I hope that your 2008 will be a even better year. Thank you for your time and thank you for what you do in the ring.
